Autograph Letter signed: "Stevenson Archer", 1 page, 4¾x8 lined writing paper attached to 5¼x8¼ green construction paper. Washington, D.C., 1873 May 5. On Congressional letterhead to C. A. McCullough, Esq. In full: "Yours of 2nd Inst. received. I was a member of Maryland legislature 1853-'54. Your Obedient Servant". Stevenson Archer (1828-1898), son and namesake of an earlier Maryland Congressman, represented the state in the US House of Representatives (1867-1875). While serving as Chairman of Maryland's Democratic Party and as State Treasurer (1886-1890), he was arrested, removed from office, charged and convicted of embezzling state funds. He served five years in prison before being pardoned on grounds of ill health. Mounting paper irregularly trimmed. Mailing fold crosses signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
